Preparing FAIRway 2 works in the Rhine-Danube Corridor

The project "Preparing FAIRway 2 works in the Rhine-Danube Corridor" is a joint, EU co-financed initiative of Serbia, Austria, and Croatia. The goal is to bring the Danube waterway infrastructure forward in an efficient, sustainable and user-oriented way.

The specific objectives of the project include preparing works interventions on the Croatian - Serbian common Danube section considering inputs of a multidisciplinary stakeholders forum, specifying the further development of the transnational waterway monitoring system (WAMOS), development of an improved method for stakeholders’ coordination and preparing physical improvements of mooring places in Austria, Croatia and Serbia.



The project objective, “Preparation for works on the joint section of the Danube between Serbia and Croatia,” is divided into two key activities: Monitoring of the Serbian–Croatian Danube Common Section and Modelling & Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) of the same section. The Monitoring activity was carried out by the Croatian project partner—the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia. Conversely, the Modelling and MCA activity was carried out by the Serbian project partner—the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia.

Within the scope of the activity "Modelling and Multi-Criteria Analysis," the project envisaged the development of a 1D hydraulic model, the redefinition and prioritization of critical sections, the definition of criteria for multi-criteria analysis, the development of a 2D hydrodynamic and hydromorphological model and the preparation of an integrated study including proposals for alternative solutions.

As a result of these project activities, new characteristic navigation levels were obtained, the catalogue of critical sections was updated and a 2D hydrodynamic and hydromorphological model was developed. The conclusions of the integrated study provided recommendations for future steps and investments, as well as an analysis of shortcomings and limitations.
